Channelling AI’s Potential to Benefit Humanity
The Holy Grail of Artificial Intelligence (AI) research is to enable the computer to see, listen, and understand the world in a similar way as humans. While the goal of a self-aware and cognitive computer has yet to be attained, AI has unquestionably demonstrated tremendous progress and capabilities in recent years. Today, AI-enabled applications are pervasive. For example, decision-support systems incorporating AI can effectively assist clinicians in medical diagnoses. In an urban context, a visual intelligence platform can make decisions based on traffic flow analytics and pedestrian behaviour to inform real-time interventions in transportation.
The InnoHK Centre for Perceptual and Interactive Intelligence (CPII) was established by The Chinese University of Hong Kong in 2020 under the InnoHK initiative of the Innovation and Technology Commission of the HKSAR Government. Its research covers computer vision, multilingual speech and language technologies, natural language processing, and AI-enabled design automation.
Through pioneering research and applications in its key strategic areas, CPII is dedicated to addressing global challenges to achieve social benefits in Hong Kong, Greater Bay Area and beyond.
CPII’s mission is to advance cutting-edge AI technologies to address real-world challenges in key sectors such as education and health. We aim to drive digital transformation, deliver societal and economic benefits, nurture local talent, attract global expertise, and champion ethical, sustainable AI development. Through strategic partnerships with industry and spin-off companies via technology transfer and licensing, we aim to promote the practice of AI-based technologies in the real-world and position Hong Kong as a premier global hub for AI innovation.
